Fern attended the School of Art and Design and later transferred to The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.

Fern and Ellen met when they were both teaching at The Painter’s Nest in Southampton, Pa. where Fern later became the resident framer and general manager. She then partnered with Ellen to assist in teaching at The Ivyland Art Group.
